Artistic Statement
What makes someone human? Every character in fiction is human in some way even if they aren't specifically human in their story. From Tragedy to Comedy, from Musical to Straight play, each character has had a life they have had to journey through. Through my art I always try to learn more about the human experience in order to give a more authentic version of my performance. Through this process, I connect with the character on a deeper level, making myself and the character become one in the same. A person is human because of their thoughts, emotions, experiences.
As an actor, I have had the pleasure of working on a plethora of different genres, including: Dramatic Contemporary with Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Chekhovian with Three Sisters, Period Drama with Amadeus, comedia del’ arte with Tartuffe, and Shakespearean with Measure for Measure which I am currently working on. All of these different genres have characters that have had previous lives and experiences that have shaped who they are as people. For me, it is extremely important to understand the lives of the characters I play, because it helps me to feel more alive as an actor.
As a Theatrical Design/Technology person I believe that the tech aspects of theatre are some of the most important parts of the field that help to define not only the specific production, but the entirety of theatre. The work that is done behind the scenes from the Scenic Designer sketching up the final draft of the set, to the costume designer sewing in the final details into the costume, to the stage manager running all of the lighting and sound cues from the manager booth. Each and every technical role is very important and adds just as much as the actors on stage.
Bacause of this , i believe that it is important to at least have a basic understanding of multiple technical fields to have a wider knowledge theatre as a whole. I have had the privelige to be a designer/tech person in multiple different fields in my life, including: Lighting Tech/Design, Sound Design, and Stage Management. I have been a Master electrician and a Assistant Designer in the lighting field, I have been an assistant sound designer in the sound design field, and I have also been a stage manager. Each of these fields have helped me gain more knowledge of theatre and has given me the opportunity to learn skills that I have never thought I would learn in my life.
